Because I had nobody to talk to 99% of the time, the once totally-shy-lowkey-antisocial-anxious-introvert-me was much more open to conversation. It took a little time, but eventually I felt comfortable talking to basically anyone and didn’t feel afraid to. Working in food and customer service really pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. I worked with so many different people that really sharpened my communication skills and made me a much more open-minded and accepting person. The mental and emotional struggles of independent living are extremely intense, but they will shape you into a fearless, confident, and strong person. My biggest challenges were all mental, but I learned so much about myself and the world around me through it all. As painful as it is, all your insecurities and fears are easily brought to the surface when all you have for company is your own mind. Consequently, you have to learn how to deal with them in a healthy way. You have to learn strategies for processing, coping, and healing. The most important thing you have to learn is self-love and self-care. There’s no valid reason for them to dislike me unless I’m an asshole to others and the planet. If they for some reason do dislike me, who cares because they don’t even know me. I’ve always been the type of person who doesn’t hop on trends or likes to “follow the crowd,” so this has never been too much of an issue for me. However, I did realize how much more open I was to expressing myself entirely how I wanted to since living alone. I wore what I wanted to because I liked it and it made me feel good. There was nobody I felt like I needed to “impress” and I could care less about looking sexy or whatever because I figured I only wanted to attract people who would look at me for who I was and accept me no matter what I was wearing. Now, I didn’t join a cult or anything like that. But I do understand the psyche of it: how one can feel so completely isolated any promise of community or a relationship causes them to jump all in without considering red flags. Not having anyone else around me at the time made the situation way worse and more isolating. When the only person around you that you are “close to” is the one that is psychologically and emotionally abusing you, who do you turn to? The phrase “self love” always conjured up a visual of someone who spends their time admiring their reflection in every surface and acting like they're better than everyone else. It made me think of that story of Narcissus: the dude who was so self-absorbed that he fell in love with his own reflection and was a total asshole to everyone around him (haha). Because I never wanted to become someone even remotely like Narcissus, I actively rejected any thought or action that could in any way come off as being narcissistic. I immediately shut down any positive thought I had about myself and never shared any of my accomplishments. I refused to be proud of myself for anything. I still struggle with this. It’s taken a while for me to realize that there’s a big difference between self-love and self-obsession. I always felt like something was wrong with me for how I felt or what I liked or how I looked. In middle school and high school, I never even let a good thought about myself enter my head. I didn’t believe I was worthy or good enough for anything or anyone. I constantly looked for “evidence” that I was “smart enough” or “funny enough” or “talented enough” or “pretty enough” through the reactions of other people or the grade on my paper. Constantly, I felt like “the evidence” showed I was lacking in some department and, being a perfectionist, I would go insane trying to perfect every little thing about myself in the hopes that maybe if I fixed ____ I would finally feel like I was accepted or was “worthy.” I have never been the type of person to hop on trends or “follow the crowd,” but I longed for acceptance for who I was. But living alone for almost 3 whole years has shown me how truly wonderful it is to come home to someone who you have a deep connection with and love for. This epiphany for me reminds me of that scene in “Into the Wild” where Christopher McCandless realizes that sure, vibing in nature and exploring the unknown has been spectacular, but he’s missing human connection and a person to share it all with. The place where I belonged and where I would always belong. I genuinely believed--and it was certainly true for a while--that as long as I was in a beautiful place I loved and had the freedom to do the things I loved, I would be completely happy with my life. All I needed was the ocean, a surfboard, art, and a guitar. Yes, all of these things bring me joy and are literally the only tangible things I can think of that do make me happy. As someone who is content just being alone, I didn’t think being so far from my family or not living with someone else would effect me in any way. I’ve experienced things I never even imagined. The struggles I’ve faced have made me incredibly strong in myself. When I think about the person I was before, I can barely remember her. She’s a complete and total stranger to me. When you are alone, you have to learn how to live with yourself. You have to learn how to navigate what’s going on inside your head so you don’t drown. You have to be brave every single minute of your day because literally no one else is there to hold your hand through it. It’s so freakin’ hard but I do believe that it is something that everyone should learn to do. At the end of the day, the only person you can ever count on being there forever and ever is yourself. As someone who can’t stand feeling stuck in such pain, I constantly seek answers and solutions that will help pull me out of the darkness and “fix” my problems. The beauty of the natural landscape of Hawaiʻi didn’t give me that feeling of contentment and belonging anymore. This all had me confused beyond reason. It literally felt like something inside me had completely shattered and I had no idea why. It felt like everything I had created inside me had been blown up and swept away and I didn’t know who I was anymore. It opened up a part of me that I didn’t think existed--a sense of pride of where I came from and a feeling of belonging I never felt when I was growing up there. Initially I thought I would paint a fully-colored detailed picture onto the fin, but, inspired by the minimalistic designs of many surf shirts and retro surf shop logos, I decided to take a different angle and paint a simple black-and white line-art design of our favorite surf break. Using a larger brush, apply at least 3 even coats of gesso to any area of the fin you wish to paint. I covered the whole front of the fin. Make sure you let each layer dry completely before going in with another. I used a grey colored pencil to do this, but I recommend using a 2B graphite pencil so it’s easier to erase mistakes. NOTE: make sure you apply light pressure! If you apply too much pressure to the pencil, you risk scratching off the gesso layers below. If you need to erase, do so as gently as possible! Take it from me, I erased too hard at one point and ended up shredding off part of the gesso and had to reapply it all over again (which was not fun, haha). To do this, roll a handful of clay into a log shape. Then insert the fin into the top and began shaping the clay around it to form a solid and polished base. Spray water onto the clay to help smooth it out more. You can make your stand look however you wish! Make sure you do not use oven-bake clay because that would mean baking the clay AND the fin, which I can’t imagine would be a wise idea. If you’re like me and are dying to finish it, you can speed up the drying process by setting it in front of a fan and/or in the hot sun (which essentially bakes it naturally and speeds up the drying process tenfold). I used a cream-white acrylic paint that was a little similar to the color of the fin, but you can go nuts here! I recommend applying at least 2 layers of paint, depending on how opaque you want it to be. Coat the fin and the base with 1-2 layers of varnish. Once again make sure that each layer is completely dry before adding another. Don’t worry if it looks like it is covering up your painting! Although I grew up in the snowy mountains of Colorado, I have always been fascinated by the ocean and tropical landscapes. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to the beautiful islands of Hawai’i. From the moment I laid eyes on images of its otherworldly beauty and majesty, I knew I had to go there someday. To say the least, I became obsessed. No, seriously. Despite growing up in the snowy mountains and completely landlocked state of Colorado, I dreamed of being a surfer in Hawai’i. I decorated my room with fake leis from party stores and constantly scribbled ocean waves and surfers in my sketchbooks. The anonymity of included figures adds a sense of wonder and addresses an individuals’ personal relationship with nature.
